GERMANY, Special call for proposals of the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung: Digitale Gesundheit in Entwicklungsländern, apply by 31 January 2024

The aim of the funding is to strengthen the use of already developed digital technologies (software, digital devices, etc.) in the healthcare sector. The aim is also to demonstrate their scalability with a large number of users. The funded digital technology should demonstrably improve healthcare services and health indicators in order to enable their routine use.

The proposed initiatives may include areas such as artificial intelligence, advanced data processing and improvement of diagnostics and therapy. Possible technologies used may include mobile phones, wearable devices, remote monitoring by sensors, image scanners, robotics, virtual reality, telemedicine or others.

The following conditions must be met in order to apply:

  • Total application volume of approx. €50,000 to €500,000
  • Duration of the programme of at least 3 years
  • Financing model with decreasing use of funding over the course of the funding period, transition to independent financing after the end of the funding period
  • Networking with other relevant local stakeholders
  • Scientific monitoring and evaluation of the programme with proof of impact

Applications may be submitted by non-profit non-governmental organisations as well as universities or university institutions from Germany that have already been working successfully in the project country for several years in close cooperation with local partners and have suitable organisational structures for successful implementation.

As a first step, applicants are requested to submit an informal application outline of up to 5 pages (preferably in English). This should describe the programme objectives including indicator(s), the planned main activities, the project planning in terms of content, time and funding as well as the previous and existing cooperation in the project region with details of previous donors and funding. At least one partner organisation and a local contact person in the project country must be named, a confirmation from the local partner organisation(s) of the intended cooperation, a budget overview in Excel format and a declaration of consent to the storage of the applicant’s data must be enclosed. Following a pre-selection process, the selected applicants will be invited to submit full applications. The funding decision will be made by mid-2024.
