UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies: Bruno Schulz and the Jewish-Polish-Ukrainian Triangle. Prof. Stanley Bill and Dr Vira Tsupyk will join Dr Uilleam Blacker to discuss Schulz’s origins in the multicultural context of Galicia and the complex ways in which he is viewed in Poland, Ukraine and beyond. The event will also celebrate the publication of Stanley Bill’s recent translations of Schulz, Nocturnal Apparitions, published with Pushkin Press. Stanley Bill is Professor of Polish Studies at the University of Cambridge. Dr Vira Tsypuk is British Academy Research Fellow at The Courtauld Institute of Art. She works on Ukrainian-British cultural relations in the late nineteenth – first half of the twentieth centuries. She is researcher in history (art history) and sociology, art curator. She is the author of the project and curator of a permanent exhibition in the Drohobych Museum “Bruno Schulz and his city”.

Annual Shevchenko Lecture “UKRAINIAN CULTURAL TREASURES UNDER THREAT FROM RUSSIAN AGGRESSION: Losses, Protections, and Repatriation” with Ihor Ostash. Since the start of the Russian war on Ukraine, eight of the UNESCO World Heritage treasures in Ukraine have come under the threat of destruction. In the past two years of escalated war on Ukraine’s territory, 872 cultural heritage sites and 1,907 cultural infrastructure entities have suffered destruction, and damage sustained by over 630 places of worship. To safely preserve Ukraine’s museum collections, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine evacuated 43 museums and preserves. Extraordinary efforts have been expended toward protecting Ukrainian cultural heritage, particularly by UNESCO.

In partnership with the Maidan Museum (Kyiv), Canadian Institute of Advanced Studies hosts the photo exhibit depicting the damage and destruction wreaked upon various places of worship in Ukraine as a result of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. The programm of the Exhibit reception includes an informative walk-through with the Maidan Museum’s Director Ihor Poshyvailo to learn more about the history and context of the Destroyed Temples exhibit.

Conference “Religion and War in Ukraine: The Political, the Public, and the Possible”. This international, interdisciplinary conference takes stock of the profound impact of war on religious life in Ukraine since the invasion and launches an international conversation about the role the range of religious groups in Ukraine – Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and Muslim—can play after the war. The conference will also include the opening of an exhibition, “Destroyed Temples of Ukraine.” Hosted by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta, in cooperation with the Working Group on Lived Religion in Eastern Europe and Eurasia.

His presentation will spotlight the extensive assault on Ukraine’s heritage, particularly its religious sites, and Ukrainian resilience in the face of this destruction.

DGO Annual Conference “Imperial rule and colonial experience in Eastern Europe”. The annual conference will discuss the extent to which postcolonial approaches to empire research provide new insights for explaining politics and society in Eastern Europe. The focus will be on the relationship between empire and violence, integration and disintegration as well as the promise of prosperity and identity. Ukrainian writer Yuri Andrukhovych and historian Botakoz Kassymbekova will kick off the event with a talk on the biographical and historical dimensions of imperial rule and colonial experience.

Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival, held annually in New York City, celebrates its fifth season. This year’s theme is Crossing Borders, spotlighting Ukrainian chamber/ensemble works created and played beyond the geographical borders of Ukraine, as well as pieces that engage with new art forms and genres. All the composers presented as part of this year’s festival have lived and worked outside Ukraine for reasons ranging from emigration to education, employment, escape, and exile.
As part of this theme, UCMF will be honoring the Ukrainian-American composer Virko Baley, who turns 85 this year, and will be in attendance. The programs include world premieres by Baley, Mykhailo Chedryk, and Olga Zaitseva-Herz, plus six North American premieres. Many of the performers are Ukrainian by birth or heritage; ensembles include the NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble and string quartet The Rhythm Method. Exhibition “Alexander Chekmenev | DONBASS – Photographic memories from 1994 onwards” with a guided tour in Ukrainian. The photographic memories show portraits of people who go about their daily lives alone and in groups, in urban and rural areas. On display are original photographs from the series “Donbass”, “Passport”, “Black & White Luhansk”, “Faces of War” and “EASTER”, which were taken after 1994. They show portraits whose aesthetics are influenced by studio photography. The person is at the center of the picture and the background appears like a canvas, reminiscent of a stage set. Alexander Chekmenev is one of Ukraine’s most influential photographic artists. His photographic portraits have been shown in exhibitions in the USA, France, England, Belgium, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland and Germany and are represented in the art collections of the Center Pompidou (Paris), the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. The exhibition is on display until 09.06.20224.

Interdisciplinary Workshop “Ukrainian Refugees in Germany and the United States after the War: Implications for Global Refugee Policy”Funded by the Stiftung Deutsch-Amerikanische Wissenschaftsbeziehungen (SDAW/ Foundation on German-American Academic Relations), this interdisciplinary workshop is designed to generate comparative critical insight and expertise on Ukrainian migration and integration in Germany and the United States as case studies for the examination of global refugee policies. Papers are invited that provide critical perspectives on legal and social policies guiding Ukrainian refugee admission and (temporary or longer-term) integration into Germany and the United States, the relationship of Ukrainians to other refugee and migrant populations, as well as their representation and treatment in both countries. The united aim is to combine both – historically informed research and current political issues in Southeastern Europe. The conference is less devoted to strictly historical issues but offers a global and policy oriented approach. The conference zeroes in on a curated selection of themes that hold paramount importance for the region amidst the current geopolitical landscape.

The Call for Proposals is now open until the 16th of April 2024 and abstract submissions until the 14th of May 2024.
