The panel will be moderated by Natalia Khanenko-Friesen, University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada). After introductory remarks by the panelists, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the discussion.
The scattering of Ukrainians around the world has been caused by many factors and has led to the establishment of Ukrainian communities and organizations on all continents. According to the World Congress of Ukrainians, by the end of 2021, over 12 million people of Ukrainian descent lived outside Ukraine. Shortly thereafter, in May 2022, another 5 million were added to this number – Ukrainian citizens who had to leave their country to flee the war. At the same time, over 7 million became internally displaced persons. One point of view from which this issue is researched in Ukrainian history is the study of mass forced displacement and migration processes caused by wars in the 20th and 21st centuries; this seminar will discuss this issue in a comparative perspective.
