Event Report: ALLEA Supports the Ukrainian Research Ecosystem through International Exchange and Collaboration

A satellite event ‘Supporting the Ukrainian Research Ecosystem through International Exchange and Collaboration’ was held alongside the ALLEA General Assembly 2026 in Warsaw, Poland. It convened representatives of European academies, Ukrainian research institutions, policymakers, and members of the Ukrainian scientific diaspora with the aim to discuss the future of Ukrainian science in the context of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.

Many of the discussed recommendations were subsequently reflected in the Appeal of the ALLEA General Assembly in Support of Ukrainian Science, adopted by ALLEA Member Academy Delegates on 28 May 2026. This Appeal reaffirmed and underscored the ten-point Action Plan adopted in Warsaw, Poland, on 2 June 2022 by the leadership of ALLEA, the Polish Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, and the Royal Society of the United Kingdom. It called on ALLEA Member Academies, funders, and global leaders to take practical steps, some of which are outlined within, to support the continued resilience of Ukrainian researchers and institutions amidst the ongoing aggression by Russia.

The event demonstrated a strong and enduring commitment among European academies, research organisations, and policymakers to support Ukrainian science.

A resilient, internationally connected, and well-supported research system is not a secondary element of Ukraine’s recovery – it is one of its preconditions.
