Grants

EU: Horizon Europe Twinning Call

  • Deadline: 18 January 2022; single stage selection process
  • Funding: between 0.8 and 1.5 million EUR for max. 3 years
  • The ambition is to raise the research profile of the institution from the Widening country as well as the research profile of its staff, including a special focus on strengthening the research management and administrative skills of the coordination institution from the Widening country. Activities that can be supported through Twinning include at least some of the following:
    • Short-term staff exchanges.
    • Expert visits and short term on-site or virtual training.
    • Workshops; conference attendance.
    • Organisation of joint summer school type activities.
    • Dissemination and outreach activities.
  • A research component not exceeding 30% of the total Horizon Europe grant may include an exploratory research project. This will open opportunities for integrating smaller research activities, thereby strengthening the commitment and the engagement of the twinning partners. Coordinators must be legal entities established in Widening countries. At least 70% of the budget for research activities must be allocated to the coordinator.

DAAD Leonhard Euler-Programm

  • Deadline: 31 January
  • Funding for graduate students, postgraduates, doctoral candidates and university teachers from Belarus, Republic of Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan), South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia) and Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Serbia) and German university teachers.
  • Funding is provided for combined study and research stays of graduate and doctoral students from the specified countries at the home university (sur-place) and at the partner university in Germany, which serve the purpose of realizing master’s, diploma or doctoral theses.

EU: MSCA Staff Exchanges 2021

  • Deadline: 9 March 2022
  • MSCA Staff Exchanges involve organisations from the academic and non-academic sectors (including SMEs) from across the globe. Support is provided for international, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary mobility of R&I staff leading to knowledge transfer between participating organisations.
  • Mobility through secondments: The organisations constituting the partnership contribute directly to the implementation of a joint R&I project by seconding and/or hosting staff members. Such a project must explore activities that can be based on previous work but should go beyond and generate or strengthen long-term collaborations.
  • Skills’ Development: For participating staff members, the project should offer new skills acquisition and career development perspectives.

Fellowships

Ukrainian Research in Switzerland (URIS): 2 fellowships, apply by 20 November 2021

FU Berlin: Rising Star – Junior Fellowships in the Department of Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy

  • Deadlines: 30 November and 31 May
  • To attract postdocs (< 4 years after a PhD), who have not previously studied or work at the FU Berlin
  • Applicants whose research projects span two research groups from two different institutes within the department BCP (Institute of Biology, Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Institute of Pharmacy) might have a higher chance of success in the case of equal qualification. Successful applicants may apply for a grant for one of the groups.
  • New as of November 2021: An additional fellowship is reserved for persons from developing or transition countries in accordance with OECD (except PR China and India).

CANADA, Stuart Ramsay Tompkins Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, apply by 1 December 2021

The Stuart Ramsay Tompkins endowment provides for the University to invite scholars from the successor states of the Soviet Union to visit the Departments of History, Classics, and Religion and Modern Languages and Cultural Studies for 10 months, so that “the body of the University and Canadians generally shall have the benefit of scholarship” from this region.

Berlin Study Foundation of the House of Representatives/ Die Studienstiftung des Abgeordnetenhauses (English description)

  • Deadline: 15 December (annual)
  • Aimed at PhD students & postdocs from France, Great Britain, USA and the successor countries of the former Soviet Union
  • Duration: 10 months (starting on 1 October)

Copernicus Stipendium-Programm

  • Deadlines: 1 March & 1 September
  • Scholarships to undergraduate students from Eastern and Central European, North African, and Central Asian countries
  • Eligibility: undergraduate students, incl. medicine (in 4-5 year); German: B2-C1; < 4 months already in Germany at the time of application or already spent 1+ semester in Germany
  • Duration: ca 6 months. During the first 3 months of their stay in Germany, the scholarship holders attend study courses at a German university, and in the last 2 to 3 months they complete an internship in a company, government agency or organization.

AvH Georg Forster Research Fellowship

  • No deadline
  • Eligibility: Researchers from developing or transition countries in accordance with OECD (excluding PR China and India), with proposals relevant for the continued development of the country or region of origin. “Eligible applicants must have lived outside Germany for a min. of 12 months in total in the 18-month period prior to submission of the application. Potential applicants of German nationality are eligible to apply provided that their habitual place of work and residence has been located abroad on the assumption of permanence for at least 5 years.
  • Two types: (a) Postdoctoral researchers: < 4 years after PhD, (b) Experienced researchers: 4 years < PhD < 12 years
  • Duration: for (a) 6-24 months; for (b) 6-18 months, can be split in max. 3 periods over 3 years
  • Can apply for a 1-year return fellowship to sponsor reintegration into an institute abroad in Argentina, Bulgaria and Romania, and

EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships

  • No deadline, 2 selection rounds pa
  • Spring evaluation: includes all eligible applications submitted by the 2nd Friday of February, 14:00 CET. Autumn evaluation: includes all eligible applications submitted by the 2nd Friday of August, 14:00 CET.
  • Duration: 2 years
  • Eligibility: < 2 years after a PhD AND at least 1 first-author paper published in English originally; International mobility; “candidates who have already started working in the host laboratory can apply only if they have been working in the host laboratory for < 6 months at the time the application is complete”.
