Medizinische Hochschule Hannover (MHH) supports Perinatal Centre in Lviv

As part of a partnership with Hannover Medical School (MHH), a laboratory for modern genetic diagnostics for newborns has been set up at the Perinatal Centre in Lviv, Ukraine. The project was launched in 2023 and is part of the “Clinic Partnerships” funding program of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), with the GIZ investing around 1.2 million euros in the project.

This German-Ukrainian clinical partnership is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Halyna Shcherbata (DUAG member), who works at the MHH Institute of Cell Biochemistry, where she leads a research group investigating the function of miRNAs in maintenance and differentiation of stem cells under normal conditions, stress or disease in the fruit fly Drosophila.

This partnership is implemented together with the Institute of Human Genetics, the Department of Pediatric Metabolic Medicine, the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Outpatient Clinic and with strong support from the MHH Presidium. The cooperation between Lviv and Hanover also contributes to a nationwide network for genetic diagnostics and expertise in Ukraine and advances the training of the local staff, offering comprehensive training courses at the MHH to Lviv colleagues.
