GERMANY: The KIU Research Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies, apply by 11 August 2024

The KIU Research Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies supports innovative and significant research on topics related to Ukraine. Researchers from various disciplines such as history, cultural studies, social sciences, economics, legal studies and related fields are invited to intensively advance their research, broaden their networks and contribute to an emerging vibrant Ukraine-related research environment located at the European University Viadrina, in cooperation with its excellent partner institutions in Berlin.

Fellows will enjoy intellectual exchange and international inspiration from the interwoven Polish-German Border region, plus access to the vast resources within the competence network, including the Centre for East European and International Studies Berlin (ZOiS), the Humboldt University Berlin, the Free University Berlin, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Wissenschaftskolleg Berlin.

The KIU Research Fellowships are intended to bring scientists of all career stages from 2 years after completing their doctorate to the Viadrina University and the institutions of the competence network for 3 months to concentrate on their research and to initiate or implement collaborative projects. Fellows are expected to focus on a project, contribute to regular colloquia of the KIU with at least one presentation of their own work, and to explore the potential of joint research work both with other fellows and with KIU members. Fellows will closely cooperate and enjoy intellectual exchange with their individual hosts from within the KIU.

For the winter semester 2024 eleven fellowships are offered for committed scientists from all the above-mentioned disciplines, starting in October 24. Research topics should be related to, but are not limited on the umbrella topic “War in Ukraine: Destruction of heritage – mastering legacy”.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) funds over four years two centres for interdisciplinary Ukrainian studies: The “Denkraum Ukraine” centre at the University of Regensburg and the “Kompetenzverbund Interdisziplinäre Ukrainestudien Frankfurt (Oder) – Berlin (KIU)” centre at the European University Viadrina in cooperation with Berlin universities and scientific institutions. A total of almost five million euros will be available until 2028. The selected centres are aimed to contribute to the expansion of expertise on Ukraine in Germany and strategically bring together social science and humanities research and teaching on Ukraine between departments and institutions. The centres will also play a special role in science communication and the networking of German, Ukrainian and international players from science and civil society: current research results are to be prepared for the specialist audience and a broader public, especially for institutions involved in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
