The twinning scheme was established quickly following the russian invasion of Ukraine with the aim was to coordinate support UK universities have been keen to offer but unclear on how best to proceed. UUKi partnered with Cormack Consultancy Group (CCG) to deliver the scheme, with support from the President’s Fund of Ukraine for Education, Science, and Sports, and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Over 100 initial partnerships were created and a collection of useful resources was established.
In his blog Jamie Arrowsmith also notes the UK-Ukraine R&I grant scheme created in 2023 with funding from Research England, which provided support for 32 institutions looking to transform their twinning partnerships into long-term strategic partnerships.
