“We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment – become the center of the universe.” ― Elie Wiesel, Nobel laureate, and Holocaust survivor

Dear colleagues,

This is no regular Newsletter. The Russian Federation attacked Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Since then Russia wages a premeditated unspeakably brutal war not only against Ukraine, but against the whole civilized world. Before the war we planed to share with you the long anticipated results of the BMBF call for German-Ukrainian Cores of Excellence.
Instead now we appeal to the whole international academic community to stand with Ukraine and its people! In this special issue we share with you an overwhelming expression of solidarity with Ukraine, inform on support programs and offers aimed at fleeing or stranded students and researches from Ukraine. We also invite you to join our task-force #StandWithUkraine led by Dr. Anna Grebinyk and/or inform on other support programs by sending an e-mail to contact.ukrainet@gmail.com.
Each of us can make a difference - act now!

Dr. Oksana Seumenicht, Managing Director, the German-Ukrainian Academic Society/ Research Development Manager, MDC, Berlin & Professor Olga Garaschuk, President, the German-Ukrainian Academic Society/ Chair of the Department of Neurophysiology, Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen
